U CHANNEL WANT UNSIGNED INTERNATIONAL SUBMISSIONS

U Channel are one of the biggest tv channels in the UK. The reason for this is that they are the channel which focuses most on the wide and varied urban talent from these islands, and as such have built up a great audience figure, and been supportive of the homegrown talent here....and rightly so. Our contact tells us that they are interested in showing videos from unsigned artists from overseas, though it is most likely that they will play videos of tracks which are performed in English. The purpose for this is that many of the UK artists who are played on the station are also unsigned, and they want to do a comparison with what is happening in places such as the States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc. You should email cat@vitv.co.uk to ask about the submission details, but this really is a great opportunity if you have a video which has a great track and an imaginative idea behind the video (they realise it wont be a Spielberg production!) to get to a wide audience. In case any UK heads reading this, dont panic, theyre not changing their policy!!!

They have 5000 member djs who check the list of music they put up on their website. If the djs like what they then they ask for a promo cd. It is the artist/label who is advised of the request and ships the cd out. They guarantee at least 50 cd requests over a 3 month period. They charge $49 US Dollars to promote your cd on their network. They are a company based in Canada, and they are basically acting as a pseudo tastemaker database that djs worldwide have latched onto to preview the latest releases, and then get them sent to them.Check their site at www.radiodirectx.com where you can see their list of stations. Of course, if you want a concerted promotion in campaign in one particular area or region, then this does not guarantee that. It guarantees that you'll get at least 50b requests from ANYWHERE in the world, however if it helps with a little initial exposure which you can use to build your profile, then it's not a bad deal. If of course you want promotions in the UK & Europe done by the best in their field, then you come to us! Email agency@belles.demon.co.uk for details

MULTI HIPHOP LINK

Just came across a portal that had many hiphop sites listed that we think you would perhaps find useful. It's part of SK8TV.COM and the specific link is HERE

NEW HIPHOP MIXTAPE SITE

OK, we came across this by accident, and werent sure, but felt you might be able to use this info. The site in question is "Directing you to new hiphop music" and the site is updated almost every day with details of the latest Hiphop mixtape releases. They say they take the hard work out of discovering new hiphop music and provide the details to go and buy the latest mixtapes. Obviously mixtapes will be bangin out new joints often well before they are officially released, and the site says "DJS, ARTISTS, RETAILERS......If you have a new hiphop mixtape that you want displayed on this site, hit us up" They basically list the tapes just out and where they can be bought from So if you want it listed, check out www.jah.clara.net It will also let you see which djs are playin which joints/styles, and the different shops online that take mixtapes, so there can be a lot of useful info in that site for you.

NEW CENTRAL SITE FOR COLLEGE INTERNET STATIONS

Really interesting one this. Set up by Detroit's DJ Osiris, headsupfm.com is a site where college radio djs & internet stations can sign up & have their show appear in the On Air Box with spotlights on djs, events, articles & reviews and much more. So in effect, it is beginning to centralise a lot of college internet shows going on from all over the place. A good look for internet djs obviously, but also useful for fans of hiphop online to check out the different sounds and also as a resource tool for artists & labels to connect with internet djs. So if you know a college radio dj, tell em to get their show on the site and help build this resource which could be very useful in times to come

TV SHOW LOOKING FOR VIDEOS/FILMS/GRAFF/BREAKING

Hash Pling is a show based in East Lansing MI. It's on cable access reaching 40,000 MSU students and airs Mondays 10pm on WELM The presenter & producer is Joe Peligro and he says the show "focuses on deprogramming the masses using humour and social commentary" The point being, he wants to air your films/videos of artists, graff, break crews etc. So if you've got any videos or films that you think might be appropriate, email joep@wlnz.org or send them in to WLNZ Studios, Joe Peligro, 400 N Capitol Suite 001, Lansing, MI 48933 USA Of course, it sounds the kind of thing that might also be open to suggestion if you have any good ideas for a programme that relates to hiphop, graffiti, breaking that is perhaps away from the mainstream look, so if you have ideas and just as importantly, know how to put them together, why not drop Joe a line with a COHERENT proposition (lol!)

SOURCE FOR GLOBAL ONLINE RADIO

Stumbled across this the other day. It acts as a resource to find the "hottest" radio stations which are online only, but broadcasting live. We took a look and saw stations listed from all over the USA & Europe, especially Germany & France. It may act as a good source to find out about stations, then do a web search to find the actual home pages, as they are not linked as such at the resource site, though you can get to hear them broadcast. Check it out for yourself at www.black-radio.org

MOBILE UNDERGROUND NEW ONLINE STORE

Thought we'd bring to your attention this online store which deals solely in underground hiphop. They take 30% of the retail price you set. They will create an artist page with sound samples and the whole set up seems pretty sound, as you would find with the likes of cdbaby.com. The difference being that this site is building on the fact that you will find only underground hiphop at it, and with fewer artists, each artist gets a bit more shine for browsers. All your questions will be answered within the site, so check it out at www.mobileunderground.com

SOUTH AFRICAN DISTRIBUTOR

Just for information, for anyone looking for distribution in that part of the world, check out www.mastermax.co.za

AFRICAN ARTISTS LOOKIN TO RECIPROCATE

Realmenare a rap/hiphop group bsed in Africa. They want to hook up with overseas artists who can help promote their music in their countries, and in return they will do likewise. They say they are connected to major music heads, radio djs & club djs where they are so they can help set you up with a fan base. Once you have got in touch, you can exchange cell phone numbers and talk about how you can help each other. They have a press kit portfolio at www.talentmatch.com The contact name is Femi Lawal and the email address is realmen_online@yahoo.com We think this COULD be a great opportunity, but would also advise that if you do get in touch, you get certain things clarified such as exactly where in Africa they are, exactly how do they intend promoting you in Africa (ask for some websites of some of their contacts) and ultimately they say that artists can go and play shows in each other's countries. That's fine, But ensure that the venues in Africa have a website/direct contact point and ensure that you are not in an agreement where they pay for you to go to their country, and you pay for them to go to yours. This might sound overcautious, but unfortunately for Realmen, others from Africa have set a bad precedent, so it's best to make sure you know exactly what youre dealing with. The ideal situation is that they hook you up with the contacts in Africa who you then deal with directly, and set up your own arrangement, and of course, in return, help Realmen with contacts in your country. But dont let us put you off, as we say, it's unfortunate, but past experience tells us to double check everything.

SOUTH AFRICAN STREET CULTURE SITE

Interesting one this. RAGE is a portal for those wanting to get a snapshot of what's happening down there. It's a magazine which covers general news, features and also urban music from a street culture perspective. One of the main guys there Zubz is also an emcee and we've been tipped off by a 3rd party that these guys are hot.....we'll be finding out shortly for ourselves. Anyway, check out www.rage.co.za as it is a good read

SOUTH AFRICAN STATION LOOKING TO WORK WITH OVERSEAS STATIONS & ARTISTS

We heard from our friend Sensei Tate, of the Hiphocalypse Movement in South Africa, a very pro-active movement supporting their local artists and they also run a radio show which was voted 2nd in the whole of Africa at the African Hiphop Indaba Awards. They are syndicating their show which they package into an hour long cd showcasing South African acts, and they have an hour on German Youth Radio and Namibian Campus Radio. They are willing to reciprocate, and do a similar showcase of overseas artists from stations who support their local scene. They could also look at doing a live crossover. If you are a dj outside of Africa with a radio show, this is a great opportunity to hear what's happening on the South African scene and give it some exclusive time in your immediate area. In return, you can help some of your local acts potentially build a South African fanbase with the showcase Sensei Tate will do in return on their show. If interested, email tate@rucus.ru.ac.za

ICLOZ

Came across this portal quite recently. Based in Senegal, it covers various forms of music, but a specific interest in r&b & hiphop. If you check out their poll & vote for your favourite style, you'll see r&b/hiphop comes out top of the preference for other readers, so that's the kind of readership they have. Written in French, it also has links to a number of online African & French radio stations, and they regularly send out news letters. Check out the site HERE

NEW BOOM BAP PORTAL

Arthur Van Wyk is about to launch a BOOMBAP for Africa. Known in the Netherlands & Scandanavia, this will be also a retailer & business network. Marked as the HIPHOP SOUL OF AFRICA, covers graf, downloads, events, interviews, movies, discussion boards & more. At the time of writing at beginning of July, the site is still being developed, but should be up shortly....check it HERE

HIPHOCALYPSE

This is a website run by Rob One & Sensai Tate in Grahamstown & Johannesburg in South Africa. It is set up to support a movement of Youth Culture incorporating artists and a radio show which is syndicated. They cover reviews, news, interviews and are a very interesting source to find out what's new & hot at street level in these areas. They are also happy to reach out to the wider community. We have mentioned the site before (see below), but we are now planning an interview with Sensai Tate & the team to find out more about the hiphop scene there generally. Their site is quite basic, but that's not really the point...theyre providing relevant & positive information about the local scene, and all the technical wizardry in the world cannot make up for lack of content, so definitely check out their site HERE and you can also email tate@rucus.ru.ac.za

PLANET URBAN

More & more Aussies gettin in touch with us these days which we like, cos they got a good scene and they got a similar attitude to life as the Scots! This time, Jamiel at Planet Urban got in touch. Planet Urban is a big website Down Under which has radio shows and the medium to help promote global artists. They are looking for drops for the various radio shows broadcast by Desh, Chris Z and jay. Email jay@planeturban.com.au to get the vibe, but you got a lot of freedom to express yourself. They also have a download section where people can download tracks for free. Within that are 4 types of downloads.

Exclusive downloads which will only be available at their site. In return you get front page adds on the site plus a feature article, a wallpaper will be dedicated to the artist and maximum airplay of the track on their radio station. In other words, youre getting benefit in kind via the exposure. This means however you are not free to sell any cds, vinyl or downloads of it anywhere else, though are free to distribute to other radio stations. There's nothing stopping you from letting them use a track that perhaps you werent exactly going to make an A side for example, but effectively Planet Urban would own this track in any real sense of sales. But, if you feel the exposure will then turn the world onto what you got, then they certainly highlight it for you, and it's free promotion.

There's then normal downloads which can be any track released or unreleased and will get your name on the most visited page on the site. There are sample downloads so that if you have a new track out, you can have the sample previewed at the site. Then there are video clips which can be streamed or downloaded

Check it out at www.planeturban.com.au They prefer if you send any music via cd to their office for Jamiel's attention at 69 William Street, Preston, VIC 3072 Australia

THE RAP CELLA

Heard from Draino at this online retail store. In fact, had also heard about The Rap Cella from some Oz heads on an Australian Hiphop site, so word on the street is these fellas are the real deal. The Rap Cella deals in selling cds only and they are keen to review any good quality hiphop. Would suggest you check their site at www.therapcella.com to get a flava of the kind of thing theyre selling. A lot of UK artists are doing well over there just now, and Oz & UK hiphop in many cases seem to have a similar approach. Australia has a very healthy hiphop scene which is growing nicely and they support their homegrown artists too, a similar kind of vibe in some ways to the UK. So, once youve checked their site, if you think your cds would sit well in their store, email Draino at info@therapcella.com for the address to send.

INTERNET RETAILER

Indie CDs is an internet retailer in Oz. They sell quality cds from around the world and target the Australian market though retailing worldwide via the main site and Amazon. There is a quality control element but they are committed to indie artistys and not established major artists. The enquiry form is at the site which is www.indie-cds.com

LINK TO ALL NEW ZEALAND HIPHOP RADIO

OK, for those that dont know, New Zealand is set off Australia's east coast and divided into two islands, appropriately called North & South Islands. Quite a sizeable population and has had a hiphop portal hiphop.nz.com going on for some considerable time now. Radio & media in Australia and New Zealand quite often like to cover what's new from overseas, and so a link kindly provided by nzhiphop.com to all the relevant radio stations there is REALLY handy. UK hiphop artists in particular are gettin a fair bit of shine in Oz at the moment, and both Oz & NZ obviously have historic links with the UK, but they are multi cultural societies which brings with it healthy interest in all forms. So, click on the link HERE and connect with the radio peeps in New Zealand.

Get in touch with Diane at HolArt@bigpond.com.au and send your videos/dvds to Hoodways Entertainment, 26 Alberto Street, Lilyfield 2040 NSW, Australia

Probably suggest you double check the Australian format before sending.....eg UK is PAL, USA is NTSC etc etc

FAR EAST NEWS

STATION IN JAPAN LOOKING FOR SUBMISSIONS

Gone Fishing for Blue Skies is a station which introduces quality independent music from around the world to the Japanese marketplace. Bigfoot is the main man there, and first of all he and his team will want to check out the music, so either highlight where your tracks can be heard online or send them a link to soundfiles. If they like what they see and hear, they will ask you to send through a cd, and will notify you once they have broadcast it. Email bigfoot@gonefishingforblueskies.com

THE REAL DEAL IN JAPAN

With thanks to Derek at CD Baby who travelled over to Japan to find out more about the situation there regarding formats, e-commerce, buying music habits in terms of you making your music available there, click HERE to read his full report. You WILL find it very interesting and quite surprising given Japan's reputation for being at the forefront of online buying, downloads and technological commerce. Turns out that the Japanese people are turning away from that largely due to the mistrust of credit card details online, they do not want cd-rs cos they bust the players, but are quite prepared to pay decent money for proper cds and vinyl. There is a cultural difference to operating in Japan and the advice has always been if possible go there to build, or have representatives of some kind there who can assist. There is a strong vinyl market and there are two separate charts, one for Japanese artists and one for overseas artists. But do check it out as it will probably serve as a real eye opener for you.

JAPANESE HIPHOP & US LINK

DJ Trik is based in the States, but has strong links with the Japanese underground market. Trik can speak Japanese which has helped him link up with many of the underground artists there, and help get them exposure on the only station in the US to give over time to Japanese hiphop. Every Friday from midnight to 5am on 90.7FM KFSR (
